I started blogging about my adventures taking minibus taxis in Durban in 2011. It was a novel thing for me because like many white people in Durban and South Africa, I never needed to take a taxi before or even public transport for that matter. I was 25 years old, and eager to shake it up a little.
A friend and I shared the same enthusiasm for public transport and found that we needed to do something about the lack of information about taxis - where they go, how much they cost... So we started TaxiMap. A website with information about over 800 minibus taxi routes in South Africa. Check it out and give us feedback - we want to keep mapping more routes and make it useful for existing commuters and even people who have never taken a minibus taxi before.
Now, it's time to blog about the next adventure.
I will be travelling around Durban's townships, taverns and taxi ranks to speak with people who have protested about service delivery. I want to understand what protestors are saying, and what's been done about it. (This is part of my research for a PhD in Sociology, specifically about informal electricity).
